Research Participation

To further our scientific research, we often invite individuals like you to participate in our research and experiments. Studies take place in California, around the world, and online. Please consider joining us in the ones that speak to you.

Implicit Beliefs in the Study of Experimenter Effects

This global initiative investigates whether the implicit beliefs of both experimenters and participants influence their results in psychic tasks. We ask the questions: Does the researcher’s belief in psi influence the results of psi experiments? Does precognition exist? The study uses a standardized psi protocol developed by Dr. Daryl Bem. Participants will be asked to complete the experiment themselves by performing an implicit association task between psi and anti-psi (based on your reaction time, it is possible to assess your unconscious bias). Then you will need to recruit 16 friends/family to complete the same task.

If you’d like to participate or have questions about the study, please email Nina Fry with the subject line “Experimenter Effects.”

Spiritual Competencies Project

Are you interested in shifting the field of mental health care to include more attention to the spiritual aspects of people’s lives? We are too and we need your help! The vast majority of mental health training does not include anything about spirituality, even though we know that spiritual/religious beliefs and practices are central to psychological and emotional well-being.

IONS is conducting research to help us learn more about the training that most mental health professionals receive. Our goal is to develop and disseminate more holistic curriculum to mental health practitioners. We are looking for 1200 licensed mental health professionals who are NOT spirituality oriented and are in clinical practice to take a 25-minute survey. Study participants will be entered into a drawing to win a free iPad (chances of winning are 1 in 300)! This is where we need your help to get the word out:

Do you have a listserv or newsletter that goes out to licensed, practicing mental health providers (psychiatrists, psychologists, MFTs, LCSWs, CAADACs or Professional Counselors)? Do you have access to a clinic, group practice, or other place where you could a flyer?  Do you have a social media account where you could post a Facebook post or tweet?

We appreciate it so much! Any questions? Contact the Research Manager, Nina Fry, or call 707-779-8293 for more information on the study and how you can help support this exciting research!

Missing Photon Study

If you are a healthy adult between the ages of 18 and 70, able to focus your attention on a quiet task for 20 minutes, this study may be for you!

  • The experiment explores the nature of how the mind might influence or change things around us
  • The purpose of the study is to learn more about how focusing attention may influence things and the light around us
  • This study consists of a one-time session at the Earthrise Retreat Center in Petaluma, California
  • You will also be asked to complete an activity that will need your focus and attention for 20 minutes
  • For your participation you will receive a paperback copy of: Entangled Minds by author: Dean Radin, PhD

If you would like to learn more about the study or participation, please contact Jennifer Okonsky at 707-779-8263 or send an email.

Full-Trance Channel Study

The purpose of this study is to investigate how the phenomena known as full-trance channeling works. Specifically, we are interested in the physiological state of the channel during a session. Multiple physiological outcomes and subjective questionnaires and interviews will be conducted before, during, and after channeling sessions. For the purpose of this study we are defining a trance channel as follows: An individual says that they go into a trance state at will (the depth of the trance may vary) and then a disincarnate entity/spirit uses the channel’s body with their permission to communicate directly through the consciousness of the channel (rather than the individual relating what they are hearing mentally). If you consider yourself a full-trance channel and are interested in learning more about participating in this study, please click here for more information.

Got Psi?

Many people have had precognitive dreams or successful intuitive hunches and would like to know if they might have psychic (or “psi”) abilities. To provide a simple way to explore these abilities, this site provides a suite of psi tests based on techniques similar to those used in more formal laboratory experiments. The tests are fun (and valid) and you’ll get immediate feedback about your performance. There are also various “Halls of Fame” where you can compare your performance with others.
